Monthly Genre Assignments

Monthly Genre Assignments

Students are assigned a monthly genre.  This is to encourage students to read books, finish books, try different genres, present orally to a small group, and celebrate completing a book with a creative project.  The project will be assigned at the beginning of the month, and due at the end of the same month (with the exception of November/December).
Projects are assigned allowing time for students to do quality work.   Project assignments will be different with each genre. Below is our list of genres by month:

Project: Book Jacket due, October 2, 2017

  • OCTOBER = (Auto)Biography:  a written account of another person's life, either written BY them, or NOT written by them.
Project: Tea Party on October 31.

  • NOV / DECEMBER = GRAPHIC NOVEL: This is the one opportunity for your student to have a graphic novel as their genre choice.  A graphic novel is a book made up of comics content. Although the word "novel" normally refers to long fictional works, the term "graphic novel" is applied broadly and includes fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work.
Project: Make your own mini-graphic novel

  • JANUARY = Award Winner: Annual award for most distinguished book in that category.
Project:  Scrapbook Page

  • FEBRUARY = Musician Report:  a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented.
Project: Concert poster and music clip

  • MARCH = Historical Fiction:  narratives that take place in the past and use imagination and use historical events and people.
Project: Penny Wax Museum

  • APRIL = Poetry:  the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.
Project: Poet Tree

  • MAY = your choice of genre.  Can be the same or different from above.
